POSITION SUMMARY

The Industrial Construction Form Carpenter / Concrete Carpenter is responsible for constructing, assembling, installing, and dismantling concrete forms and related structures for industrial construction projects. This position performs skilled carpentry work associated with foundations, equipment pads, walls, slabs, piers, columns, trenches, pits, curbs, elevated structures, and other reinforced-concrete construction.

The Form Carpenter must be capable of interpreting construction drawings, specifications, elevations, dimensions, and layout information to construct forms accurately and safely. The position works closely with ironworkers, laborers, concrete crews, surveyors, foremen, and other construction trades to ensure concrete structures are properly formed, reinforced, placed, finished, and completed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Formwork and Carpentry

• Construct, assemble, install, brace, align, and dismantle concrete forms.
• Build wood, plywood, engineered, modular, gang, and specialty concrete forms.
• Construct forms for:
• Foundations and footings
• Equipment foundations and machinery pads
• Concrete walls
• Columns and piers
• Slabs and elevated slabs
• Curbs and sidewalks
• Trenches and pits
• Pipe supports and sleepers
• Structural bases
• Tank and vessel foundations
• Industrial equipment foundations
• Concrete structures and miscellaneous embeds
• Install formwork to specified dimensions, elevations, slopes, and tolerances.
• Install and maintain form bracing, shores, strongbacks, walers, ties, anchors, and supports.
• Ensure forms are properly aligned, level, plumb, square, and adequately supported before concrete placement.
• Apply form-release agents as required.
• Install chamfers, blockouts, keyways, reveals, bulkheads, and other form details.
• Modify and repair forms as required during construction.

Layout and Blueprint Reading

• Read and interpret construction drawings, structural drawings, concrete drawings, specifications, and project details.
• Understand dimensions, elevations, grades, slopes, tolerances, and reference points.
• Perform basic layout using tape measures, levels, lasers, chalk lines, string lines, and other layout equipment.
• Establish form locations from control points and project benchmarks.
• Verify dimensions and elevations before concrete placement.
• Coordinate layout and formwork requirements with the foreman, superintendent, surveyor, and other trades.

Reinforcing Steel and Embedded Items

• Coordinate formwork with reinforcing steel installation.
• Work around reinforcing steel while maintaining required concrete cover.
• Install or assist with installation of embeds, anchor bolts, sleeves, blockouts, inserts, plates, and other items required before concrete placement.
• Verify embedded items are properly located, secured, and protected from movement during concrete placement.
• Communicate conflicts or discrepancies to the appropriate supervisor.

Concrete Construction Support

• Assist concrete crews with preparation for concrete placement.
• Inspect forms before placement for proper dimensions, alignment, cleanliness, and stability.
• Assist with concrete placement, consolidation, screeding, and finishing when assigned.
• Monitor forms during concrete placement for movement, leakage, deflection, or failure.
• Make necessary adjustments or repairs during concrete placement under direction of supervision.
• Strip forms after concrete has achieved the required strength or as directed.
• Clean, inspect, maintain, and properly store reusable form materials.

• Follow all company, project, OSHA, and site-specific safety requirements.
• Attend required pre-task meetings, toolbox talks, and job hazard analyses.
• Use required personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Inspect tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolds, and work areas before use.
• Maintain proper fall protection when working at elevated locations.
• Follow requirements for working around open excavations, floor openings, leading edges, and elevated concrete structures.
• Maintain safe access and egress from work areas.
• Follow proper procedures for handling lumber, plywood, reinforcing steel, form hardware, and other materials.
• Use proper lifting techniques and mechanical assistance when required.
• Maintain good housekeeping and keep work areas free of unnecessary hazards.
• Never remove, modify, or bypass required guards, barricades, or fall-protection systems without authorization.
• Immediately report unsafe conditions, incidents, injuries, damaged equipment, and potential hazards to supervision.
• Stop work and notify supervision when conditions are unsafe or outside the employee's training or authorization.
• Previous industrial or heavy construction carpentry experience preferred.
• Demonstrated experience with concrete formwork.
• Experience working from construction drawings and specifications.
• Knowledge of concrete formwork methods and construction practices.
• Ability to read and understand construction drawings.
• Ability to understand elevations, dimensions, grades, and tolerances.
• Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and other trades.
• Strong attention to detail and quality.
• Commitment to safe work practices.
• High school diploma, GED, trade school, apprenticeship training, or equivalent construction experience preferred.
